RAM stands for Random Access Memory, and it’s one of the components most people get wrong when building their first PC. They either don’t put in enough of it, or they pour money into ultra-fast kits when their system can’t actually take advantage of the speed. Let’s clear that up.

What RAM is for

When your computer is running, every program you have open lives in RAM. The operating system itself, your browser, the game you’re playing, the file you’re editing — all of it sits in RAM because RAM is fast. Compared to your SSD, RAM is roughly 100 times faster, and compared to a hard drive it’s thousands of times faster.

When you run out of RAM, your operating system has to swap data out to your SSD, which is way slower. That’s why an underpowered system feels sluggish even with a fast CPU — the bottleneck isn’t compute, it’s memory.

How much RAM do you actually need?

The honest 2026 answer:

  • 8GB is the absolute minimum. Fine for very light browsing and office work. Don’t build a new PC with this.
  • 16GB is the sensible baseline. Handles gaming, normal multitasking, and most everyday productivity comfortably.
  • 32GB is the new sweet spot for builders in 2026. Modern games are starting to lean harder on RAM, and if you do anything creative (video editing, Lightroom, running a few browser tabs while gaming), it pays off.
  • 64GB+ only makes sense for 3D artists, video editors working in 4K+, software developers running multiple VMs, or anyone running local AI models.

DDR4 vs DDR5

RAM comes in generations. DDR4 is the older standard, still common in Intel 12th-gen systems and older AMD platforms. DDR5 is the newer standard, used by AMD’s AM5 and Intel’s LGA 1700/1851 boards (the newer Intel boards use DDR5 only).

DDR5 is faster on paper and has higher max capacities, but most users won’t feel the difference in everyday use. Gaming benchmarks show a modest but real improvement, especially with the latest CPUs that are tuned for DDR5. If you’re building a new system in 2026, DDR5 is the way to go — DDR4 is a dead-end platform.

Speed and timings explained

RAM is rated by two main numbers: speed (in MT/s — megatransfers per second, often labeled MHz) and CAS latency (CL).

  • Speed is how many transfers per second the memory can do. Higher is faster. DDR5-6000 means 6000 MT/s.
  • CAS latency is how many cycles it takes the RAM to start responding to a request. Lower is faster.

The sweet spot for AMD Ryzen 7000+ systems is DDR5-6000 with CL30. For Intel, DDR5-6400 to DDR5-7200 is great. Going faster than this gets expensive fast and the gains shrink.

Dual channel is mandatory

Always buy RAM in matched pairs. A single stick of 32GB will run in single-channel mode, which is significantly slower than two 16GB sticks in dual-channel mode. The difference can be 20% or more in some workloads. If you ever want to upgrade later, buying four sticks is fine but expect some loss in achievable speed compared to two sticks.

XMP and EXPO — read this before you ignore it

Here’s a thing that catches a lot of first-time builders: out of the box, your fancy DDR5-6000 kit will run at the default 4800 MT/s. To get the speed you paid for, you have to enable the memory profile in your BIOS. On Intel boards this is called XMP. On AMD it’s called EXPO. Either way, it’s a single toggle that gives you the rated speed.

If you skip this, you’ve essentially paid for premium RAM and gotten budget performance. Always enable XMP/EXPO after building.

What to look for when buying

  1. Match the type (DDR4 or DDR5) to your motherboard.
  2. Buy a matched 2-stick kit, never two single sticks bought separately.
  3. Pick a sensible speed (DDR5-6000 CL30 for AMD, DDR5-6400+ for Intel).
  4. Make sure your motherboard’s QVL (Qualified Vendor List) includes the kit, or at least a similar one.
  5. Watch the height. Some big air coolers conflict with tall RGB sticks.

The honest take

RAM is one of the easiest places to over-spend. A $400 super-tight 8000+ MT/s kit isn’t going to make your PC feel faster than a sensible $130 DDR5-6000 kit unless you’re doing very specific workloads. Get enough RAM, get a matched kit, enable the memory profile, and move on with your life.
