The motherboard is the big circuit board everything else plugs into. It’s also the component most beginners overspend or underspend on, because nobody bothers to explain what the specs mean. The good news is that once you know what to look for, picking a motherboard is straightforward. The bad news is that motherboard product pages were written by people who really like acronyms.

What a motherboard actually does

Think of the motherboard as the city your other components live in. It provides:

  • Power distribution from your PSU to every component.
  • The physical socket your CPU plugs into.
  • Slots for RAM, GPU, and storage drives.
  • The BIOS/UEFI firmware that boots your system.
  • The chipset that handles communication between components.
  • I/O — USB, networking, audio, display outputs (for integrated graphics).

It doesn’t make your computer faster on its own. A more expensive motherboard mostly buys you better build quality, more features, and headroom for overclocking — not raw performance.

The size: ATX, Micro-ATX, Mini-ITX

Motherboards come in standard sizes that determine which case you can use:

  • ATX (305 x 244 mm): the standard full-size board. Best for most builds. Most features and expansion slots.
  • Micro-ATX (244 x 244 mm): slightly smaller, usually cheaper, with fewer expansion slots but everything you actually need.
  • Mini-ITX (170 x 170 mm): tiny. Used for compact builds. Limited to one GPU slot and two RAM slots, and you pay a premium for the compact engineering.

Pick your motherboard size based on the case you want. Most cases support ATX and smaller.

The socket and chipset

These two together determine which CPUs you can use.

  • Socket is the physical interface. AM5 for current AMD, LGA 1851 for current Intel.
  • Chipset is the silicon controller on the board that handles features.

For AMD AM5, the chipsets are (best to budget):

  • X870E / X870 — top tier, full feature set, all the PCIe lanes.
  • B850 / B650 — sweet spot for most builders.
  • A620 — budget, no overclocking support.

For Intel LGA 1851:

  • Z890 — supports overclocking, full feature set.
  • B860 — mid-range, no CPU overclocking but plenty of features.
  • H810 — budget.

If you’re not overclocking, a mid-tier chipset (B-series on AMD, B860 on Intel) gives you almost everything the top tier does for less money.

VRMs — the unsung heroes

VRM stands for Voltage Regulator Module. These convert power from your PSU into the precise voltages your CPU needs. Stronger VRMs mean cleaner, more stable power, which matters more the higher the wattage of your CPU. Reviewers usually mention VRM quality. For a 65W CPU, almost any VRM is fine. For a 170W flagship, you want a board with a beefy VRM and heatsinks.

RAM slots and supported speeds

Most ATX and Micro-ATX boards have four RAM slots; Mini-ITX has two. Check:

  • Type (DDR4 or DDR5) — must match your CPU platform.
  • Maximum supported speed — listed as “DDR5-7200(OC)” or similar.
  • Maximum capacity.

Boards usually list higher speeds with “(OC)” — these are achievable with XMP/EXPO enabled, not guaranteed at default settings.

PCIe slots

This is where the GPU and some other add-in cards go. Look for:

  • At least one full-size x16 slot wired for x16 lanes (your GPU goes here).
  • The PCIe generation — Gen 4 or Gen 5 in modern boards.
  • Additional smaller slots for things like capture cards or extra storage.

M.2 slots

This is increasingly the most important spec for storage. Each M.2 slot has its own generation (Gen 3, Gen 4, or Gen 5). Make sure:

  • You have enough slots for your planned drives — modern boards usually have 2-4.
  • The slots support the right generation for your fastest drive.
  • Some slots share bandwidth with other things — read the manual to avoid surprises.

I/O — the rear ports

Look at the back panel layout. Make sure you’ve got:

  • Enough USB ports (and the right types — USB-A vs USB-C, and the speed ratings).
  • The right display outputs if you’ll use integrated graphics.
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth if you want them built in (saves buying a card).
  • Audio jacks you’ll use.
  • Ethernet — 2.5GbE is now standard, 5GbE/10GbE on premium boards.

What to actually buy

For most builders in 2026, the realistic shopping process is:

  1. Pick your CPU first.
  2. Pick your case form factor.
  3. Filter for the right socket and form factor.
  4. Choose a mid-range chipset unless you specifically need top-tier overclocking.
  5. Read 2-3 reviews of any specific board to check for surprises (especially VRM, BIOS quality, and M.2 slot sharing).

You don’t need the most expensive board on the shelf. You need one that has the features you’ll actually use, from a manufacturer with a reputation for good BIOS updates. That’s it.
