Refresh rate is one of those specs that gets shouted about in monitor marketing — 144Hz! 240Hz! 360Hz! — without anyone explaining what it means or when it’s worth paying for. It’s genuinely one of the most noticeable upgrades you can make to how a PC feels to use. It’s also one of the easiest specs to overspend on. Here’s the plain-English version.
What refresh rate actually is
Refresh rate is how many times per second your monitor redraws the image on screen, measured in hertz (Hz). A 60Hz monitor updates 60 times a second. A 144Hz monitor updates 144 times a second. That’s the whole definition — more updates per second means motion looks smoother, because the screen is showing you more intermediate steps of everything that moves.
The difference is immediately visible. Drag a window across a 144Hz screen and it glides; do the same on 60Hz and you see it stutter along in steps. Once you’ve used high refresh, going back feels like wading through mud.
Refresh rate vs frame rate — not the same thing
This is the confusion that trips people up. Refresh rate is a property of your monitor. Frame rate (fps) is how many frames your graphics card actually produces. They work together, and the lower of the two is what you feel.
A 144Hz monitor can only show you 144fps of smoothness, even if your GPU pumps out 300fps — the extra frames are wasted. And a 144Hz monitor fed only 50fps by a weak GPU gives you 50fps of smoothness, not 144. So a high-refresh monitor is only as good as the graphics card feeding it. Buying one without the GPU to match is money spent on a number you’ll never see.
The tiers, and what each is good for
- 60Hz — the old standard. Fine for general use, office work, and slower games. The bare minimum for gaming today, and increasingly the thing people upgrade away from first.
- 120–144Hz — the sweet spot. The jump from 60Hz is huge and instantly noticeable, and modern mid-range GPUs can feed it in most games. If you buy one upgrade, make it this.
- 240Hz — for competitive players in fast shooters where every millisecond counts. The improvement over 144Hz is real but far subtler — diminishing returns set in here.
- 360Hz and beyond — genuinely only for serious esports competitors chasing the last sliver of advantage. For everyone else it’s a spec-sheet flex you won’t feel.
Where refresh rate matters most
The faster the on-screen motion, the more refresh rate matters. Competitive shooters, racing games, and anything with fast camera movement benefit enormously. Slow, deliberate games — strategy, turn-based, story-driven single-player — benefit far less, because there’s less fast motion for the extra frames to smooth out.
So a competitive player and someone who mostly plays slower single-player games should reach different conclusions. High refresh isn’t universally “better spent” money — it depends entirely on what you play.
The catch: you need the GPU to feed it
It bears repeating because it’s the mistake people make. If you buy a 240Hz monitor but your graphics card only manages 90fps in the games you play, you’ve bought 90fps of smoothness and a lot of unused panel. Before you pay for a high-refresh monitor, check what frame rates your GPU realistically hits in your games at your resolution, and buy a refresh rate that matches. Don’t forget adaptive sync
A related feature worth having: adaptive sync (G-Sync or FreeSync). It syncs the monitor’s refresh rate to your GPU’s actual frame output moment to moment, eliminating the screen tearing you get when the two fall out of step. Most decent high-refresh monitors include it. Turn it on and forget about it — it makes variable frame rates look far smoother than the raw numbers suggest.
How to decide
- Playing mostly competitive/fast games with a capable GPU? 144Hz minimum, 240Hz if you’re serious and your GPU can feed it.
- Mixed or mostly single-player gaming? 144Hz is the sweet spot and all most people ever need.
- General use, budget build, or a weak GPU? 60Hz is honestly fine, or 120–144Hz if the price gap is small — but don’t stretch for 240Hz.
- Whatever you pick, make sure it has adaptive sync and that your graphics card can actually produce frames near that rate.
Refresh rate is one of the few upgrades you feel every single second the PC is on, which is why it’s worth understanding rather than just chasing the biggest number. Match it to your GPU and the games you actually play, and 144Hz will feel like one of the best value upgrades you’ve ever made.
