The JPG (also written JPEG) is the most common image format in the world. Nearly every photo you take, see online, or share is a JPG. It’s brilliant at what it does — but it also has a well-known weakness that, once you understand it, will change how you handle your images. Here’s the plain-English guide.
What JPG stands for
JPG comes from the Joint Photographic Experts Group, the committee that created it. That word “photographic” is the whole point: JPG was designed specifically for photographs and realistic images, and it’s exceptional at compressing them into small files. The .jpg and .jpeg extensions are the same format — just two spellings of the same thing.
The clever bit: lossy compression
JPG’s genius is lossy compression. Unlike a PNG or a ZIP, which keep every bit of data perfectly, JPG deliberately throws away information to make files dramatically smaller. The trick is that it discards the details your eyes are least likely to notice — subtle variations in colour and fine detail that the human visual system barely registers.
The result is remarkable: a photo can be squeezed to a fraction of its original size while still looking, to your eye, virtually identical. This is why you can store thousands of photos on a phone and load images instantly on the web. For photographs — full of gradients and complex natural detail where a little lost data is invisible — it’s the perfect trade.
The catch: quality you can’t get back
Here’s the important weakness. Because JPG throws data away, that data is gone for good. And there’s a subtler trap: every time you edit and re-save a JPG, it compresses again, losing a little more quality each time. Save, edit, re-save, repeat, and eventually the image visibly degrades — blocky patches, fuzzy edges, muddy colour. This is called generation loss, and it catches people out constantly.
The practical lesson: keep an original, high-quality version of important images, and avoid repeatedly editing and re-saving the same JPG. If you’re doing serious editing, work in a lossless format and only export to JPG at the end.
Quality settings: your control over the trade-off
When you save a JPG, you usually choose a quality level. This directly controls the balance between file size and image quality — higher quality means a bigger file with less data thrown away; lower quality means a smaller file with more visible compression. For most photos, a high (but not maximum) setting hits the sweet spot: small file, no visible loss. Crank the compression too hard and you’ll start seeing the tell-tale blocky “JPG artifacts,” especially around sharp edges and text.
Why JPG is bad for graphics and text
The flip side of being great for photos: JPG is a poor choice for screenshots, logos, diagrams, and text. Its compression creates ugly fuzzy halos around the sharp edges those images are full of. For anything with crisp lines or text, or anything needing a transparent background, PNG is the right call. Match the format to the image and you avoid both blur and bloat.
Where you’ll meet JPG files
- Photographs. Phone cameras, digital cameras, and photo sites default to JPG.
- Web images. Most photographic images online are JPGs for fast loading.
- Email and sharing. Its small size makes it the easy choice for sending photos.
JPG vs the newer formats
Newer formats like WebP, AVIF, and HEIC (the format many phones now use) achieve better quality at smaller sizes than JPG. You’ll increasingly encounter them, especially HEIC from phone cameras. But JPG’s total, universal compatibility — it opens on absolutely everything — keeps it the safe default for sharing a photo you want anyone to be able to view. When in doubt, JPG just works.
